When Jeremy Duffield founded Vanguard’s Australian operations in 1996, index investing was considered a novelty. Fast-forward to today and Vanguard is Australia's largest ETFs manager, with more than $70.5 billion in investors' assets under management as at 30 April 2025. In our lead article Jeremy reflects on his career and experiences bringing Vanguard and index investing to Australia.
Did you know the estimated combined fortunes of Australia's 200 wealthiest people and families has surged by more than 50% over the last five years? That's very impressive, but the average returns from various share markets, including Australia's, have been considerably higher. We look at the returns from three Vanguard equities ETFs, based on an initial $10,000 investment in April 2020, to illustrate the point.
