Hi Aris, Welcome to this week's edition of Smart Investing. Vanguard's founder, John Bogle, once said: "common sense tells us that performance comes and goes, but costs go on forever." Research by Vanguard's Investment Strategy Group has now quantified the overall cost saving for investors in Australian-domiciled low-cost index funds over time, and it's in the billions of dollars. In our lead article this week, Vanguard's Senior Personal Finance Writer, Tony Kaye, walks through Vanguard's detailed research to explain why investment costs really do matter. He also reveals that around 86% of the total investor inflows into Australia's exchange traded funds (ETFs) industry are being directed into index-tracking funds. In our second article this week we name the 10 Australian companies ranked by their value and performance that have dominated over the long term. These are the stocks investors would have needed in their portfolios to achieve the average annualised return from the Australian share market. Not holding them would have led to underperformance, which underscores why broad index diversification is essential. Lastly, our third article looks into the latest ASX ETFs trading data from the month of August. Inflows into international equity ETFs continued to grab the largest slice of investor capital. Read more about where investors have been directing their funds. | |
